Teachers - What to Do About Low Performing Students

Once you have identified the students in question you should begin a whole new personal and professional attitude adjustment. But you should really identify the whole class because if your students are not doing exceptionally well, you need to change the way you teach. Yes, you are the key to how well your students perform in your class. It is your responsibility. The students look up to you to provide good and well thought out instruction, and lessons plans. It is you that must bring "new age and wholistic instruction" to your students. No one is going to do it, and you cannot count on the administration. They are trying to find out ways to cut your program because if it isn't one of the regular and standard programs, or classic classes like English, Math, Language or History, then a serious cut may be coming your way.

There is only one true way to help low performing and "at risk" students and that is a good and healthy dosage of accelerated learning practices, approaches, methods or tips.

In order to tear yourself from those old, but tried and true methods you need to adapt multiple intelligences, progressive relaxation techniques, mind mapping or brainstorming approaches, rapid and speed reading, and visualization training and much more.

It is highly special and very important that you find out each student's preferred learning style. Each student also must recognize his or her very own preferred learning style, and accept it. They must recognize how they learn, study and handle exams, and other performance driven venues.
Once this happens, you should organize your classroom schedule to incorporate each student's style.

It is not as hard as you may think, but you need to spend quality time. The moment you introduce learning through their preferred learning style, learning starts to take off to new heights, and you will have to try to keep this under control. You would have started a revolution and there is no coming back. The cat is out of the bag as the saying goes. They, your students, will just love this new hands on freedom that you are giving them.. They will be unstoppable. Sadly, if the next instructor doesn't take the baton and continue to give the students the same or equal opportunity, something might be lost. The best part is that the students will not forget even though the new teacher drops the baton or ball or refuses to keep up this new effort.

This is not getting through to you without an example, right? Let's take an example of someone who loves rap music. I do not personally understand rap music, however, have you noticed how much time and effort and discipline these kids put into learning one single rap song? It is a lot, so let's say you have something that you want them to learn. Tell them that they can put it to a rap song. It is up to you to follow the rap song, but I can guarantee you that the script will include everything that you wish them to learn, and know. You could even ask them to slow it down and explain the song each and every step of the way. You will be amazed that all of what you want them to know is in the work, and you will be entertained at the same time.

Here is another example. Say you have someone who is a gifted or highly adept at drawing or graffiti. Say you have a history class and you need a student to remember, or to understand a particular chapter or chapters, or period. Have that student draw or graffiti something, maybe on an available wall that everyone uses. The student will display on that wall or project all the information you requested plus much, much more.

Are you convinced, yet? Let's take a student who loves to sing, dance and write great lyrics.
Have that student do an English project, where she has to put together a song, sing it, maybe dance, and write those wonderful lyrics. Inside this song, you will find all the necessary details and information that you need to give this student a sensational grade. Now, you have to be a very good listener because some of those students maybe off-key a little. You will light up that student's world.
Now, you do not have to make this your entire curriculum, however, you may want to recheck what you do in the classroom. Selecting any one of these ideas maybe of help. One of these ideas may lead you to a greater idea. There are no limits here.

Once you find out their preferred learning style, do not let them down. They are thirsty for something new and dynamic.
