Do You Like People? As a Makeup Artist You Must!

Do you like making people feel good about themselves? One of the greatest rewards of being a makeup artist is helping people feel happy, confident and excited. When your client looks good they feel great. It's wonderful to be a part of this transformation. In order to become a successful makeup artist you need to like people and have developed a number of key 'people' skills. Let's look at three of them now.

Confidence

When you apply makeup you need to assure your client that you are skilled at what you do. Makeup application is very personal and intimate. You are often meeting people for the first time when you apply their makeup. They do not know you so you have to build up trust with them very quickly. Being confident in what you do goes a long way to helping your client relax and let you do your work. If they sense that you are nervous and unsure about what you are doing they will get nervous too. Not a good combination for a good result.

Approach your clients calmly, reassuringly and confidently. Let your clients feel that they are in capable hands and they are more likely to relax and enjoy having their makeup done.

A Friendly Attitude

A makeup artist has to be a 'people person'. If you don't enjoy being around people then its probably not a good career choice for you. People can sense if you're friendly, sincere and honest and are more likely to hire you if you are pleasant to be around. A friendly and cheerful attitude around your clients will also encourage future business as your clients will refer you to others and ask you back themselves. Word of mouth is the cheapest and easiest way to grow your business.

Keep Calm and Carry On

Have you heard the saying "keep calm and carry on"? Well that certainly applies in the case of being a makeup artist. You are often racing against the clock to get the work done. You'll sometimes feel that you're in an impossible situation. Too much to do, too little time, interruptions, stressed models, a hectic environment. Be prepared for all of them! It's so important to keep your cool. Staying calm under the pressure will help other people around you and enable you to do a great job despite what's going on in your environment.

If you can keep calm, have a friendly attitude towards other people and can reassure your clients by your competence and confidence you've got 3 of the key skills that will help you grow a successful makeup artist business.
