Five Ways to Save Money Around the Home

With today's unstable economy and the pressure of ever increasing bills and taxes it is important to look to ways to save money around the home. Doing things like watching your spending, being careful with your power consumption and writing a budget can all help you save money. Having a home automation system can also help you save money around the house. By having a smart home and linking your systems you can have your home running more efficiently and reduce any power wastage.

Home Automation

Having a smart home can save you money as it can significantly reducing your energy use and power wastage. For example, the lighting in your home can be programmed to switch off every time you leave the room, as well as ceiling and exhaust fans. The home automation system can control your appliances so that nothing is running while a room is unoccupied. The heating and cooling can be zoned to work in only the rooms you are using. Lights can be dimmed automatically to adjust to the amount of natural light.

Shopping

A large portion of your weekly budget goes towards the grocery bill. Try to reduce your shopping bill by taking advantage of specials and buying in bulk. Make sure that you don't go shopping when you are hungry as this can cause you to put extra things you don't need in your trolley. Write up a weekly food planner, so you know what meals you are having in advance, and write your shopping list off this, then stick to it. Buying meat from the butcher can work out to be cheaper as well as shopping at the green grocer for your fruit and vegetables. Buy loose fruit and vegetables rather than pre-packed ones. Try out the generic brands of items, you will probably find they are just as good as the named brands. Compare prices and try shopping at the end of the week as you may find more bargain items.

Household Utilities

Save money on your household bills, like water, gas and electricity by watching how much you use. Do things like have shorter showers and switch to a water saving shower head. Don't leave the water running while you are brushing your teeth and fill the sink with water when washing vegetables, rather than holding them under a running tap. Wait until you have a full load of laundry before you switch on the washing machine and dry you clothes outside on the line. Buy energy efficient light globes and switch off any appliances at the wall when they are not in use. Turn off the television if you leave the room and switch off the lights. Reduce the use of heating and cooling by having proper curtains that block out the heat and keep in the cool.

Travel

Run your car more efficiently by keeping it serviced and well maintained. Drive more efficiently too by not accelerating too hard, and use cruise control where possible. You can reduce your fuel consumption by making sure you have enough air in your tyres. If you are able to walk instead of take the car then leave the car at home. It's great exercise too.

Entertainment

If you are on a budget then watch what you spend on entertainment. Hire a DVD instead of going to the movies. Read a book or go for a walk. Have friends over for a dinner party instead of going out to dinner, and have nights where you play boardgames, have a card night or have a party with a fun theme.
